Introducing my Android FAR/AIM application
Author: John Kelly | Category: FAR/AIM Android App, UncategorizedHey guys,

I’ve started studying for my CFI again and I wanted to start looking things up in the FAR/AIM as I ran across them. I looked at the Android Market and was shocked and disappointed to find that there were VERY few android applications for pilots. Not only that there didn’t seem to be a good FAR or AIM application. This was a problem. I used to be an iPhone owner and was very pleased with ASA’s FAR/AIM app and thought to myself. Why don’t I fill the void. After a lot of hard work, I’m finally pleased to announce that my FAR/AIM application is available on the Android Market. I do plan to continue the development of the app as I have lots of ideas for it, but I need to know there are more people that just me who would enjoy having that big book we all know in their pocket and SEARCHABLE. I gotta say, the search functionality alone is worth the app. How cool is it to say, “I wonder what the VFR weather minimums are in Class C airspace at night?” and be able to search “weather minimums” and jump right to that section of the AIM. It really is nice. Let me know how you all like it!
Get it from the Android Market
UPDATE (4/4/2011): I am working on getting the FAR’s updated to 2011 (I had to wait until they made the 2011 FAR data available). Please keep submitting bug reports and I will get them fixed ASAP and release updates. And lastly, let me know if there is something about the app you would like improved. I want to make sure that your money is well spent. Thanks!
Here are some screenshots of the app:

Hi,
Thanks for the Andorid based FAR/AIM. Just downloaded it…how do I know what version it is? i.e. 2011? 2010?
Thanks!

Thanks for the support Robert! Currently I have it loaded with the 2011 version of the FAR’s and AIM.
I realized later that I never put the version in the description of the app. I’ve since update the description to mention that it is the 2011 version.
Thanks for pointing that out!

Hello. I’m interested in purchasing your application but I have a few questions first:
1. Does it include all of the FAR’s or is it truncated like some paper versions?
2. Does it include the PCG?
3. Do you intend to provide updates in perpetuity as some electronic versions do?
Thanks and I wish you continued success!

I just installed the FAR/AIM app on my Xoom and it crashes each time I try to open it. Are there any known problems with this app with the Xoom android honeycomb?
June 10th, 2011 at 6:06 pm
Henry,
Currently the app is not supported on the Xoom. I apologize. I didn’t think the market would sell you the app on the Xoom, because honeycomb is not supported. The app is currently only supported up to 2.3.3. I do have plans of updating for honeycomb at some point though.
Send me your Order ID to myflyingcareer.kelly@gmail.com and I’ll issue you a full refund.
Sorry about the mixup! Fly safe!

David,
Sorry it has taken so long to reply. Been pretty crazy around here. The app includes all FARs. If you find anything missing, or you aren’t completely satisfied. Send me an email(myflyingcareer.kelly@gmail.com) and we can chat about returning the app for a refund.
The Pilot/Controller Glossary is not included. Sorry. Thanks for the idea though. I’ll look into that for future releases. And I do plan on supplying updates every year and bug fixes as needed.
Thanks for the questions. Fly safe!

When will the 2011 far/aim app be available for android 3.0?

Todd,
Thanks for letting me know. This and a few other bugs will be fixed when I release version 2.0 of the FAR/AIM app.
Thanks!

Paul,
Version 2.0 of the FAR/AIM app will support Android 3.0. Not sure when that will be released, but hopefully by the end of this summer. Thanks!

John,
Thanks for the help, I’m an aspiring Android developer, if you need some help getting this ready for 3.0 I have some time I could give.

John,
I hope all is well, and that you are progressing both with aviation and this app. I would like your app for my Verizon Razor Max.

Jeff,
Thanks for checking in. I’m kind of at a standstill with my aviation career. Honestly, I’m waiting a bit to see if the pay gets a bit better for pilots starting out. I can’t afford the pay cut to go into the aviation industry right now. I have my family to think about. I’m really hoping things start to change in the industry once airlines and flight schools realize they can’t pay peanuts anymore.
Is the app not working on you Razr Maxx? I’m super close to releasing the 2012 FAR/AIM. I’ll look into why it may not be working on your device. Just waiting for a bit more data from the government.
Thanks!
John
